There are 3 main reasons why women don’t typically show up in family land management… until they HAVE to. 1) Child-rearing and housekeeping responsibilities. And befor anyone says “that should be an EqUaL responsibility, listen… many times it is, and many times women naturally take on the role of obviously having kids but raising them, juggling the schedules for them, trying to maintain the house of laundry and dinner time meals… that in itself is a FULL TIME job and takes up a ton of mental space… As a mom, I fully understand why women aren’t raising their hand to take one more mental load responsibility when her husband is doing it “just fine” and seems to enjoy it! 2) Lack of awareness. The husband has been handling the duties, a lot of times in his head, so of course shes not out searching for how to get involved. But even so, because much of forestry education is niched in marketing to traditional avenues… if youre not plugged into those organizations or relationships, its easy to miss out on local workshops or webinars to get more informed. 3) Lack of confidence. This isnt a confidence in their abilities, its confidence to step into an unfamiliar environment thats typically male-dominated. No one wants to be singled out or be that “dumb one”. These guys are often old colleagues and familiar with one another for years and years… and stepping into that “clique” is intimidating for ANYONE, because being the “new kid” is uncomfortable- but even moreso when youre not even sure what the subject matter is. For my men specifically- its like when your wife or daughters ask you to pick up a box of tampons or pads for the first time… So because of those 3 reasons, its not unreasonable to understand why women dont show up in the land management decisions until they HAVE to… which is usually due to death or other medical reasons in the family which thrust her into the decision making role. So if thats you… Let me encourage you, its okay! You dont need to feel guilty and its normal to feel overwhelmed. Are your wheels going round and round, round and round trying to time your harvest “just perfectly” with the market? Let this be your sign that that is NEVER a good idea… and although there are unique situations that might warrant speeding up or postponing your original harvest plan… All in all it is far wiser to stick to a harvesting plan written by a professional forester, based off your expressed goals, than trying to “time” the market. Timber selling isnt a one-off afternoon decision… Unlike stocks, you can’t (or at least shouldnt!) go to your computer and just “sell your assets”, and get cash by dinner time. When done right, it takes time… weeks or even months! Stop spinning your wheels. Work with a professional to develop a thought through harvesting guideline and timeframe.
